I could probabaly spend an entire week on the year 1968, and still leave out some important information about his key year in American history.   • increase in American forces in SE Asia
  • Veit Cong proved to be the guiding force in South Vietnam
  • Us tries to Pacify South Vietnam

LBJ remained determined:
  • optimistic reports are sent back
  • light at end of tunnel
  • overall, the public still supported America in Vienam
1968
The Tet Offensive
  • an attack on US strongholds through out Southern Vietnam by the VC
  • Tet was the New Years of Vietnam
  • eventually developed as a US win
  • shook the public, who thought the enemy close to defeat

LBJ struggles Congress cuts his power

Public Opinion Changes
  • US involvment in the war is openly critizied
  • new defense securty says it is unwinnable
  • Johnson is looked at as a bad president.
  • Johnson says he will not run again
  • Martin Luthern King is Killed five day later of Johnson Speech
  • King death made riots grow and anger is showed
  • Bobby Kennedy runs for president and then is killed
  • Humphrey, Nixon, and Wallace for president
  • Nixon wins 43% of popular vote and 56% wins electoral vote.
  • He promises peace and honor for Vietnam.
